Reading & Use of English (Paper 1)

Paper 1 tests your reading skills across 5 parts: short text MCQs, cloze passages, reading comprehension, gapped text, and paragraph matching. It is worth 25% of your total SPM English grade — and it is the easiest paper to improve on quickly because every question has a predictable pattern.

Why Most Students Struggle with Paper 1

Most students lose marks on Parts 4-5 because they rush through without strategy. They read every word of every passage, run out of time, and guess the last 10 questions. The students who score 35+ out of 40 do something different: they read strategically, not thoroughly.

Part 2 (cloze passage) is where grammar knowledge matters most. Students from Chinese-medium schools often lose marks here because they translate word-by-word from Mandarin, which produces unnatural English collocations. We address this directly by explaining English grammar patterns in Mandarin first, then practising until the correct form feels natural.

Part 3 (reading comprehension) tests whether you can find specific information quickly. Most students re-read the passage three times — our students learn to scan for keywords and answer in under 90 seconds per question.

How We Teach Paper 1

Step 1: Diagnostic test. We give you a full Paper 1 under timed conditions in your first session. This shows exactly which parts you lose marks on and why. No guessing — we see your actual performance.

Step 2: Part-by-part technique training. Each of the 5 parts has different techniques:

• Part 1 (MCQ): Eliminate two wrong answers first, then compare the remaining two
• Part 2 (Cloze): Read the full passage once, then fill gaps using grammar and context
• Part 3 (Comprehension): Underline question keywords, scan the passage, answer directly
• Part 4 (Gapped text): Match by cohesion signals — pronouns, linking words, topic shifts
• Part 5 (Paragraph matching): Read statements first, then skim paragraphs for matches

Step 3: Timed drilling. We practise individual parts first (5-8 minutes per part), then move to full papers (1 hour). Speed matters — the students who score highest are the ones who finish with 10 minutes to review.

Step 4: Weekly progress tracking. Every week, we compare your latest Paper 1 score against your target. If a part is still weak, we increase practice on that part. If you have hit your target, we shift focus to another paper.
