The Writing paper (Paper 2) has 3 parts. Parts 1 and 2 — Email/Note (20 marks) and Guided Writing (20 marks) — are the most predictable sections of the entire SPM English exam. The formats barely change year to year, which means they are the easiest marks to secure if you know exactly what examiners expect.

Part 1 asks you to write a short email or note under 80 words. Part 2 gives you content points to address in a specific format (letter, report, article, speech) in 125-150 words. Together, these two parts are worth 40 marks — almost half of the entire Writing paper.

Why Most Students Lose Marks on Guided Writing

The number one reason students score below 25/40 on Parts 1-2 is format errors, not language errors. They write an email without a subject line. They write a formal letter with informal greetings. They write a report without headings or bullet points. These are easy marks thrown away because nobody taught them the correct layout.

The second reason is failing to address all content points. Part 2 gives you 4-5 specific content points that MUST appear in your response. Miss even one and you lose marks immediately, regardless of how good your English is. We teach students to highlight every content point before they start writing and check them off as they go.

For Chinese-medium students, there is an additional challenge: direct translation from Mandarin produces awkward English phrasing. Sentences like "I hope you can give me a chance" instead of "I would appreciate the opportunity" lose marks on vocabulary range. We address this by teaching format-specific phrases and collocations in Mandarin first, then drilling them in English until they become automatic.

How We Teach Guided Writing

Step 1: Format mastery. We dedicate the first 2-3 weeks to learning the exact layout for every text type SPM tests: formal emails, informal emails, formal letters, reports, articles, and speeches. Each format has a template you can memorise — greeting, opening line, body structure, closing. Once you know the template, you never lose format marks again.

Step 2: Content point coverage. We practise identifying and addressing content points systematically. For every practice question, you highlight the content points first, plan your response in 3 minutes, then write. This eliminates the most common mistake — missing a content point because you got carried away writing about something else.

Step 3: Language upgrading. After format and content are locked in, we work on vocabulary and sentence variety. We teach 30+ high-scoring phrases specific to guided writing — phrases like "I am writing with regard to," "It is imperative that," and "I would be grateful if." These phrases signal to the examiner that you have a strong command of formal English.

Step 4: Timed practice and marking. Every session, you write one complete guided writing piece under timed conditions (25-30 minutes for both Part 1 and Part 2). We mark it line by line using the actual SPM marking scheme, then you rewrite it incorporating our feedback. This write-mark-rewrite cycle is the fastest way to improve.

What Makes Our Approach Different

Mandarin explanations for Chinese-medium students. If you come from SJKC or a Chinese-independent school, we explain format rules and useful phrases in Mandarin first. This cuts learning time in half because you understand the logic before applying it in English.

Real SPM past papers only. We do not use made-up questions. Every practice question comes from actual SPM exams (2018-2025) so you see exactly how the examiners phrase questions and what they expect in response.

Line-by-line marking, not generic grades. Most tuition centres give you a mark out of 20 and say "good" or "needs improvement." We mark every sentence — circling grammar errors, suggesting better vocabulary, and showing exactly where you gained or lost marks against the marking scheme.

83% of our students improve by 2+ grades. Across 2,000+ students over 8 years, guided writing is consistently the fastest area to improve. Most students gain 10-15 marks on Parts 1-2 within the first 3 months. That alone can push you up one full grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What formats are covered?
All text types tested in SPM: emails, formal letters, informal letters, reports, articles, and speeches. We prioritise based on which ones SPM has tested most frequently in the last 5 years.
How long before I see improvement?
Guided writing is the fastest area to improve. Most students gain 10-15 marks within 3 months. Format mastery alone can push you up one full grade.
Is the email section easy?
Yes — it is the easiest 20 marks on the entire exam. Under 80 words, simple format. But students who do not practise still lose 5-8 marks on silly mistakes. We make sure you get 18-20 every time.

Our curriculum aligns with the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) KSSM syllabus and Lembaga Peperiksaan SPM English examination format.
